STAY SAFE FROM THE FATAL TUBERCULOSIS

One fourth of global tuberculosis patients are from our country. Tuberculosis is caused by a bacteria named ‘Mycobacterium Tuberculosis’. It primarily affects lungs, but can involve other organs also.  In most cases, TB is treatable and curable; however, it can be life threatening if no proper treatment is received.

Fever lasting for more than 15 days, persistent cough, blood in sputum, weight loss, or decreased appetite should raise a concern for the evaluation of TB. It is usually diagnosed by chest x ray and sputum testing. Persons with medical conditions that weaken the immune system like diabetes, kidney disease, organ transplantation, cancer, malnourished, and HIV are prone for infection of TB. Early diagnosis and complete treatment are essential part for eradicating the disease. Improper treatment will lead to the development of drug resistance of the bacteria. Taking healthy balanced diet is also an important component of treatment. Maintaining good immunity/personal hygiene, avoiding smoking and healthy lifestyle reduce the chances of getting infected.Dr. Kodati Rakesh, Consultant Pulmonologist, Star Hospitals
