Why You Should Sleep Like A Log

Why You Should Sleep Like A Log

Is inadequate sleep nothing new to you? Well, it’s not surprising, given the fact that Indians are some of the poorest sleepers in the world.

According to recent data collected by Fitbit, Indians clock in an average of just 6.55 hours a night.

Based on aggregated and anonymous Fitbit data, statistics revealed that Asians get less sleep on average than their American and European counterparts. Well, given these figures, the overworked and underpaid Asian stereotype doesn’t seem to be too far off.

New Zealanders, Australians and the English get the most sleep on average per night. Looks like they’re doing something right.

What The Bigwigs Say

Along with diet and exercise, good sleep plays a major role in your health and overall well-being. The Committee on Sleep Medicine and Research (USA) reckons that having a good night’s sleep can help prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, while also boosting longevity, mental health and neurocognitive functions.

This is what Need for Sleep, a recent study, had to say—Indian teens who had the recommended amount of sleep did better cognitively than those teens who had insufficient sleep.

Certain lifestyle changes can improve your quality and quantity of sleep over time. These include dietary changes, exercise, keeping a consistent sleep schedule and relaxing before bedtime.

According to the reputed Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine (JCSM), irregularities in sleep patterns could be a sign of a sleep condition. Discussing these irregularities with your doctor is a must.

Sleep is undoubtedly an integral part of our lives. From maintaining your cognitive functions to fostering a healthy immune system to retaining a proper weight, good sleep goes a long way in each of our books.
