Summer Dos And Don’ts For Kidney Patients
Every one of us needs to take certain steps to protect our health during the warm and sunny summer months.
But if you’re someone who suffers from a kidney ailment, you definitely need to take a few additional precautions. Here are some of them.
Exercise, but under the doctor’s advice - Long, hot days are ideal for outdoor activities. However, check with your doctor before creating a summer exercise plan. You could include walking and yoga as they won’t sap your energy much.
Watch your fluid intake - Check with your healthcare team if you should drink more fluids when you go outdoors. It’s best to stay away from cold drinks as they can give you stomach cramps. Caffeine, alcohol and sugar are also best avoided as they drain your body of fluids.
Stay cool with hats and bandanas - A hat is an essential accessory in summer and wrapping a wet bandana around your neck can stop you from feeling thirsty. A small mouthwash can be useful to keep your mouth from going dry.
Protect your skin from sunburns - Be prepared for damaged skin if you go out in the sun sans sunscreen. A water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 15 is your best bet, as it won’t come off even if you swim or sweat. You shouldn’t be out in the sun longer than 10-15 minutes, even if you want your bare skin to soak up the Vitamin D present in sun rays.
Grab those shades - Looking at sunlight with naked eyes is calling for trouble. Instead, keep a pair of wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes from 99% of UVB rays and 50% of UVA rays.
Eat healthy - Foods that are low in phosphorous and potassium are kidney-friendly and good for health. Fruits and vegetables are the ideal health choice, but remember to eat in moderation, as all of them contain some potassium.
Don’t let dialysis play spoilsport - Even if you’re on dialysis, you can still enjoy a summer vacation with a bit of careful pre-planning. Take along portable equipment with you or identify dialysis centres close your vacation spot and schedule treatments.
Protect your skin, stay hydrated, control your liquid intake and plan a summer getaway to optimise your kidney’s health and enjoy the long, warm days of summer at the same time!
