Live Robotic Surgery Workshop at KIMS Hospital

Live operative workshops have been the most sought after event by surgeons as they get to see live surgeries and at the same time get to interact with the experts in addition to the views from other guests. Robotic surgery is an exciting technological advancement and most surgeons would have only read or heard of it. A live Robotic Surgery Workshop and CME was held at KIMS, Kondapur on March 24. The intention of this workshop was to share technology advancements and giving firsthand experience to the surgical fraternity at large. It was a unique workshop as surgeries of different specialities viz Gastroenteology, urology and Gynecology were demonstrated and the delegates had a comprehensive feast of the scope of Robotics, unlike most workshops which are confined to single speciality.

Chief Guest was the Vice chancellor of KNR University of health sciences, Telangana Dr Karunakar Reddy. He enlightened the delegates about the advancements the surgical field has gone through over the years. The aim and idea of the workshop was to demonstrate surgeries live and the minute details and crucial tricks for a successful outcome of the surgery witnessed was a wonderful experience. Robotic sciences department chief at KIMS, Dr Vijaykumar C Bada was happy to make it possible that every young surgeon felt the robotic experience.

It was organized by the Dept of Robotic Sciences KIMS, Kondapur in association with the Association of Surgeons of India Telangana state chapter. Surgeons, Gynecologists, Urologists, Practitioners and Postgraduates from Telangana, AP and Karnataka participated in the grand event. Dr Bhaskar Rao, Chairman and CEO was the Organizing Head and Dr VijayKumar Bada spearheaded the event. Hysterectomy was performed by Dr Vijaykumar C Bada & Dr Shilpi Reddy. Partial nephrectomy (Kidney preserving) for kidney tumor was performed by Dr Santosh Kumar from PGI Chandigarh and Drs Naveen Acharya and Sasanka from KIMS.

‘First’ Robotic Surgery for ventral hernia cure performed:

Live surgeries were demonstrated from 8 am to 4 pm. Ventral hernia repair with mesh is probably the first time being demonstrated by Robotics. It was demonstrated by Dr Vijay Kumar C Bada, Chief of Robotic Sciences and Surgical Gastroenterology at KIMS. Ventral Hernia is a very common ailment for which the definitive treatment is surgery! The corrective surgery involves repair by placing a mesh which prevents future recurrences. Traditionally it was performed by open technique, but with the advances in science, minimal access surgeries are being performed to place the mesh. And it has been noted that the patients are seeing considerable benefits due to the laparoscopic surgeries.
