Mumbai: In a commendable effort to enhance community health and tackle the urgent issue of heart-related conditions, Lilavati Hospital has introduced a state-of-the-art cardiac ambulance crucial for individuals experiencing cardiac emergencies such as heart attack or cardiac arrest to receive prompt medical intervention within the first 60 minutes of the incident. This golden hour (the first 60 minutes after the event) is vital, as delays can reduce the likelihood of survival due to further damage to the heart muscle. Acknowledging this urgency, the hospital has launched an ambulance that is specially designed and staffed for cardiac emergencies, to improve patient outcomes and survival rates by minimizing treatment delays. This ambulance was flagged by Shri. Rajiv Mehta, Permanent Trustee of Lilavati Hospital. This innovative service represents a major advancement in emergency medical care, utilizing advanced technology to deliver exceptional treatment for patients in need. Currently, cardiac diseases rank as the top cause of death in India.

Cardiac ambulance plays a crucial role in delivering specialized, time-sensitive care to individuals experiencing serious cardiovascular events, aiming to improve outcomes and survival rates by reducing the time to treatment initiation. This ambulance is specifically equipped and staffed to handle cardiac emergencies such as heart attacks (myocardial infarctions), severe chest pain (angina), cardiac arrhythmias, and other cardiovascular conditions that require immediate medical attention. The launch of this cardiac ambulance is all set to transform the lives of individuals with cardiac events.

“Cardiac ambulance is equipped with advanced medical equipment tailored for cardiac care, including defibrillators, cardiac monitors, medications for managing heart conditions, oxygen delivery systems, and devices for administering intravenous medications. The ambulance crew typically includes highly trained paramedics or emergency medical technicians (EMTs) with specialized training in cardiac care. In some cases, there may be a cardiac nurse or even a cardiologist on board or available for consultation. The primary goal of a cardiac ambulance is to stabilize the patient's condition as quickly as possible. This may involve administering medications, performing cardiac monitoring, defibrillation (if needed for cardiac arrest), and providing supportive care to manage symptoms and prevent further deterioration. Once stabilized, patients are transported to the nearest appropriate medical facility capable of providing definitive cardiac care, such as a hospital with a cardiac catheterization lab or a specialized cardiac care unit,” said Dr Niraj Uttamani, Chief Operating Officer at Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre, Bandra.

Dr Niraj Uttamani further added, “The ambulance comes with an advanced feature of an inbuilt recording camera which facilitates remote video surveillance of the patient. The footage helps as a source for monitoring patient's clinical condition during transit, by the physician in the hospital. This enables rapid connectivity of EMS with the clinician, even at a remote location, thus enhancing patient care with better outcomes.

Commenting on the monumental step taken by Lilavati Hospital in cardiac care and revolutionizing emergency response for heart patients, Shri. Rajiv Mehta, Permanent Trustee of Lilavati Hospital underscored, "The New Cardiac ambulance is catered to provide advanced Life Support for facilitating the transfer of critically ill patients. It is equipped with a ventilator, defibrillator, cardiac monitor, and oxygen cylinder to address life-threatening situations like cardiac arrests and emergencies that require providing respiratory/ cardiac support to unstable patients, backed up by well-trained and experienced EMS staff. The ambulance ensures that patients receive the necessary treatment as soon as possible while en route to the hospital.  This proactive approach empowers individuals by instilling confidence that specialized care is just a call away, allowing quicker access to vital treatments when seconds matter most. This initiative underscores Lilavati Hospital's commitment not only to excellence in healthcare but also to community welfare."
