Doctors at Medicover Hospitals salvage limb of 18 year old sports loving boy who was Covid 19 Postive

Visakhapatnam, October 20th, 2020: A young 18-year-old boy _ Dhana Srinivas _ an avid sports lover could have lost his right leg as a side effect of contracting Covid-19 virus a month ago. The traces of coronavirus had an adverse impact on the lower limb of the boy leading to acute thrombosis, which could have necessitated amputation, which could have ruined the future of the young boy and his family forever.

On conducting CT Angiography of the limb, the team of experts at Medicover Hospitals identified the exact problem and decided on the treatment procedure. The boy, a local resident of Visakhapatnam, was admitted to the hospital on October 2nd, and on the following day, he was put through a series of corrective procedures like thrombectomy, peripheral angioplasty, and most importantly, pedal arch reconstruction, to salvage the limb.

Commenting on the complication and the procedure, Dr. Siba Sankar Dalai, Interventional NeuroRadiologist at the Medicover Hospitals said, “Amputating leg would have ended the dreams and aspirations of the young boy who got a bright future ahead; and we had to do our best to help the gentleman return to the ground and play his favorite sport. We are extremely happy that the young man responded to our treatment quickly, and a week later he is back on his feet and has been discharged from the hospital on October 9th.

Dr. Dalai emphasizes that COVID19 not only is a dangerous disease in the acute phase but it causes severe morbidity and mortality even after the cure. He said, many of the COVID19 patients after 2 to 4 weeks of complete cure, landed up with thromboembolic complications, They generally present with gangrene of leg, hand & brain stroke,  and this boy was one such unfortunate victim. However, the experience and expertise of Dr. Siba Sankar Dalai and his team, which is arguably the best in South India to conduct pedal arch reconstruction surgeries, helped the boy return on to his feet. Dr. Dalai deals with complex vascular problems by doing revascularization and embolization, at Medicover Hospitals, Health City, Arilova, Visakhapatnam is among the very few medical facilities in the country which has the expertise of performing such complex procedures.
