Depression - A Slow Poison
Depression is defined as a state of mind and body where you don’t want to talk to anyone, take no interest in anything and feel languid all the time. You feel neither joy nor take interest in doing things that you used to like earlier.
A constant state of depression results in degradation of various kinds, whether it’s in physical, mental or social. It’s very important to deter this newly acknowledged disease for it’s affected the lives of more than 300 million people till date.
Why You Feel Depressed
Loneliness - This has been identified as the major reason for depression. You might not have somebody to talk to about how you feel, what you need or anything else. Unavailability of close ones to share your concerns and worries triggers the feeling of loneliness and subsequently, results in depression. Emotional disconnect, in the long run, can be devastating.
Sudden Tragedies - The death of a close one, failure in academics or loss in business—anything special that’s snatched away from you first results in grief. Eventually, the inability to direct that grief and helplessness results in you shrinking down. You isolate yourself from the outer world and take no interest in its happenings, resulting in depression.
Nip Depression At Its Bud
Socialise more - You might be missing out on your friends and family. Reach out to them and involve yourself in their activities. Talk to them about your feelings and share your secrets with a close confidante. Remember, keeping everything to yourself will suffocate you. It’s imperative to release pressure from time to time.
You’re special! - Learn to value and cherish your existence. After all, you’re priceless for your closest ones, such as your parents, spouse or children.
Depression Does Not Discriminate
Consultant Psychologist Dr Namita Singh at Apollo Hospitals had this to say, "According to the recent estimates by the Indian Govt, our mental health policy projects that two out of 10 Indians are likely to suffer from mental illness by 2020. Depression is going to be at the forefront.”
“Depression does not discriminate anybody on the basis of gender, education, economic status, caste, creed or nationality. Different life events can result in depression, including the side-effects of medication, bullying, loss of loved ones, social isolation, rape, jealousy, separation and natural disasters.”
“Even the most severe cases of depression can be tackled if treatment begins early. In case medications fail, there are always talk therapies and other methods to deal with it. People simply need to come out and seek help."
Depression is not an incurable condition. With some effort, you can change yourself and lead a more happy, fulfilling and rewarding life.
