Women the primary Kidney donors and nurturers of life

KIMS ICON Hospital, Department Of Renal Sciences is observing “World Kidney Day” today. Every year, World Kidney day is celebrated to create awareness and remind everyone about the importance of our kidneys. To celebrate the same, on March 11th, Nephrologists, Urologists, and Staff of KIMS-ICON Hospitals have hosted a get together of all Kidney Transplant patients to help create awareness and highlight kidney care at KIMS-ICON, Visakhapatnam.

KIMS-ICON received transplant licence in September 2019 and have performed first transplant in October 2019. In the past 5 months, the team has performed 9 successful renal transplants. Out of these 9 transplants, 8 of the kidney donors are women. Women consistently outnumber men when it comes to donating their organs. Women who nurture and give bring new life into this world, also volunteer themselves to give second lease of life to their dear ones – be its son, brother or husband. Many studies reveal that women save lives of the men in their family through organ donations.

One of the main reasons of this trend may be because of their inherent mother psychology. In general, women more importantly mothers are empathetic and more selfless than men. They are caregivers and nurturers of life to their children, spouses and community. Men do not come forward for organ donation as they often quote themselves as the breadwinner of the family and they do not consider risking their lives. In view of huge gap for need and availability of organs for dialysis patients, men in the role of husband or brother should come forward to donate their organs. Also, there is a need to bring awareness in the public to donate their organs after demise.

Dr.R K Mahesh and Dr.Krishna Prasad., Renal Transplant physicians, KIMS-ICON Hospitals says, “Women who get new life into this world, also are the first ones to volunteer themselves when someone in the family need an organ. Though, it is a tough decision to make, women give great hope and future to the patient. It is all because women are more empathetic, and they are better caregivers and play a significant role in the life of their families. It is very important for us to appropriately value and acknowledge the important role of caregivers that the women play in our homes and our society.”

“We really hope and wish that this get together program will create a positive vibe, enough awareness and confidence about kidney transplant,” he added.

“I never dreamed of living a healthy life with my family. All of this was made possible because of organ donation. My mom gave me a new lease of life, all the hopes that crashed when I got to know about my kidney disease. After a lot of contemplation and going back and forth, my mother volunteered to donate her kidney to me. Today, we both are living a happy and healthy life. Thanks to the whole transplant team here at KIMS ICON,” says, Mr.Setti Raju, who is a transplant patient.
