KIMS Saveera Doctors Save 75 Year Old from Rare Cancer

Anantapur, December 13:

Doctors from Anantapur performed a rare surgery to save a 75-year old farmer's life. The patient, who belongs to Kalyandurg of the district was suffering from Renal Vein Thrombus which is very rare, for which the occurrence rate is only 1-10%.  He had complaints of blood in the urine, some clots in the blood, left loin pain, loss of appetite and weight loss. Initially he got checked up at some local doctor who performed ultra sound scanning and suspected cancer in the kidney. They suggested him to go to either Bangalore or Hyderabad to have better treatment. Instead of that, they went to the Kims Saveera hospital, Anantapur where urologist and transplant surgeon Dr. G. Durgaprasad examined the patient.

The patient was bleeding daily through urine. So, doctors found that the case is much more complex. Patient was fragile because of his age and serum creatinine also increased indicating the diminished function of right kidney. Usually in such case, MRI scan has to be taken to estimate the exact condition. But in this case, the patient had an implant in his left upper limb. So, the team of doctors comprising of Dr G. Durga Prasad, consultant urologist and transplant surgeon, Dr Badrinath, nephrologist, Dr. Sri Krishna radiologist took this challenge and did CECT abdomen and pelvis with all necessary precautions. In the test, they found that patient had left sided kidney cancer with tumor spreading to the renal vein, pelvicalyceal system involvement and the stage was T3aNOMO (third stage cancer). This is very rare and risky as the tumor can go directly to the heart or lungs and if it happens while performing the surgery, the patient can die on the table itself. This risk was well explained to the attendants by the Kims Saveera doctors and they agreed for the risky surgery.

The team of doctors under the leadership of Dr. G. Durgaprasad has performed the surgery without the presence of any oncologists. The surgery was done on the 4th of this month. With utmost care and meticulous dissection they could remove the entire tumor of size around 8cms and also the tumor in renal vein. The team of doctors at Kims Saveera hospital explained that the patient is now stable with serum creatinine of 2.6.  They advised him of regular post operative follow up every 3 months in view of stage 3 cancer and single functioning kidney.
