Arise Awake and Act on obesity before its too late

KIMS ICON Hospitals in association with GI Surgeons Association, convenes more than 200 leading doctors from India to exchange new advances for obesity management

 

KIMS-Icon Hospitals in association with GI Surgeons Association, Visakhapatnam successfully concluded a day-long conference on the exploding endemic of obesity and spectrum of digestive related diseases in India. KIMS-Icon received an overwhelming response from eminent doctors across the country who shared their expertise and deep knowledge on obesity which has germinated as global health crisis.

 

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Krishna Kishore, Consultant, Laparoscopic and Robotic Gastro Intestinal Surgeon, KIMS-Icon Hospital, Vizag said, “Obesity is poised to be a massive health threat in India. Various diseases including gastrointestinal diseases such as reflux disease, irritable bowel, bowel cancer, fatty liver, gallstones & pancreatitis in addition to diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and lipid disorders are growing at an alarming rate in the obese patients today. Indians are at higher risk of obesity as compared to their western counterparts as they are classified obese at a much lower weight and waist measurements. Visceral fat accumulation in the belly is a true monster that triggers obesity and related diseases in patients.

According to Diet and Nutritional Study of Urban Population’ conducted by the National Nutrition and Monitoring Bureau (NNMB), National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in around 16 Indian States indicated that 43 per cent of women and 35 per cent of men in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are obese and overweight.
