1 in 5 Indians at Risk: Indian Rheumatology Association and STAR Hospitals Hyderabad Launch Awareness Walk to Fight Silent Rheumatology Crisis
Hyderabad, 26thApril 2026:
In a significant step towards raising awareness about rheumatological disorders, the Indian Rheumatology Association in collaboration with STAR Hospitals, organized a Rheumatological Diseases Awareness Walk on Sunday, 26th April 2026.
The walk aimed to bring together healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and the general public to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and timely management of rheumatic diseases.
Why Rheumatology Awareness Matters
Rheumatological diseases are often misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and frequently ignored until they severely impact quality of life. These conditions are not limited to the elderly - they can affect individuals across all age groups, including children.
• It is estimated that 1 in 5 people in India may suffer from some form of musculoskeletal or rheumatic condition.
• Arthritis alone affects over 180 million people in India, making it more prevalent than many other chronic diseases.
• Conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Psoriatic Arthritis can lead to disability if not treated early.
• Early intervention can prevent joint damage, reduce pain, and significantly improve long-term outcomes.
Despite this, awareness remains low, and many patients delay seeking medical care, often mistaking symptoms as “normal aging” or temporary discomfort.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation of around200+ participants, reflecting strong community engagement and growing awareness around rheumatological health.
Voices from the Dignitaries
Dr. I. R. Varaprasad
President, Rheumatology Association, Hyderabad Chapter
“Rheumatological diseases are silent disruptors of life. Early symptoms like joint pain, stiffness, and fatigue are often ignored. Through this walk, we aim to educate people that timely consultation with a rheumatologist can prevent lifelong disability.”
Dr. Rajkiran Dudam
Secretary, Indian Rheumatology Association
“India carries a significant burden of rheumatic diseases, yet awareness is disproportionately low. This initiative is not just a walk—it is a movement to encourage early diagnosis, improve access to care, and empower patients with the right information.”
Dr. Liza Rajasekhar
Dean & HOD, Rheumatology, NIMS Hyderabad
“Rheumatological diseases are far more common than people realize, and they often go undiagnosed for years. What is critical to understand is that persistent joint pain, swelling, or early morning stiffness is not ‘normal’ at any age. With advancements in rheumatology, most of these conditions can be effectively managed if detected early. Awareness initiatives like this walk play a vital role in bridging the gap between symptoms and timely medical care.”
Dr. Madhuri H. R.
Joint Secretary, Rheumatology Association, Hyderabad Chapter and Sr. Consultant – Rhematology at STAR Hospitals, Nanakramguda
“Many autoimmune and rheumatic conditions affect young adults in their most productive years. Awareness can change outcomes. Recognizing symptoms early and seeking the right care can help individuals lead completely normal, active lives.”
A Collective Step Towards Better Health
The awareness walk is designed to foster community engagement and encourage conversations around joint health, mobility, and chronic disease management. It also reinforces the message that movement is medicine, and staying active plays a crucial role in maintaining joint health.
Healthcare experts from STAR Hospitals will also be present to guide participants and address common concerns related to joint pain and autoimmune conditions.
