World Pharmacists Day
It’s the seventh year of World Pharmacists Day which is being observed on 25 th SEPTEMBER 2017. World Pharmacists Day highlights the role of pharmacists in Public Health and the positive benefits they offer when it comes to health. Each year welcomes a new theme, the theme of this year is: “From research to health care: Your pharmacist is at your service.” This year’s theme was chosen to reflect the numerous contributions the pharmacy profession makes to health.
Who are pharmacists, what do they do?
Pharmacists are the backbone of the health care system. From research and development of medicines to quality analysis of the drugs, to educating future pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, and providing direct care, the role of pharmacists is very diverse. They contribute in clinical services, manufacturing, quality assurance, regulatory affairs and many other sectors. While by nature of work/practice, many pharmacists work silently behind the scenes, some of them who are in direct contact with patients represent the face of the pharmacy profession.

Pharmacists’ help people live healthier, better lives.
Pharmacists are the medication experts on the healthcare team and advice physicians, nurses,and other health professionals in choosing the right medication.
Pharmacists educate patients on the use of prescriptions and over-the- counter medications.
They ensure drug purity and strength and make sure that drugs do not interact in a harmful way.
Pharmacist responsibilities include a range of care for patients, from dispensing medications to monitoring patient health and progress to optimize their response to medication therapies.
Play an important role in helping people get the best results from their medications.
Help to improve outcomes and cut down the costs when involved in patient care.
Currently pharmacists are an underutilized resource in Indian healthcare system. Recognizing pharmacists as healthcare provider will help change the face of pharmacists. Patients would get the best care they need from the most appropriate providers, allowing physicians to see more patients, and doing what only physicians can do—which is diagnose. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to help meet the top goals: providing convenient, expanded access to medical care and controlling costs”.
