OLIVE HOSPITALS SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMED A RARE URETERIC REIMPLANTATION SURGERY

16th September, 2021: Olive Hospitals performed Bilateral Politano Leadbetter Ureteric Reimplantation surgery, a rare procedure wherein Ureter will be removed and reimplanted at the new location in the bladder. It is a clinically challenging procedure which usually takes 5 to 6 hours but at Olive Hospital this surgery was successfully performed in a record time of just 2 hours 45 minutes.

Dr. Khizar Raoof, Consultant Urologist, Olive Hospitals, who performed the surgery, said, “A 30-Year-Old Male presented at Olive Hospital with a severe back pain. Subsequent to the preliminary diagnosis and a CT Scan, it was noticed that his left kidney was not functioning properly. For further investigation, MCUG test was performed. In this test, X-Ray will be taken while urination. The X-Ray revealed that urine was getting refluxed back into two kidneys. This is one of the very rare Urological disorders which requires Bilateral Politano Leadbetter Ureteric Reimplantation surgery. If this condition was left ignored, he would have lost his both kidney & might have lead to life-long dialysis or transplantation. It was a major reconstructive procedure and I am happy that we could successfully accomplish the surgery with the help of our Anaesthesia Team and support staff.”

Bilateral Politano Leadbetter Ureteric Reimplantation Surgery is a surgical procedure in which the ureters are re-implanted into the bladder to allow urine to flow from the kidneys through them and out of the body. Surgeon removes the diseased ureter from one side of the body, and then re-attach it to a healthy bladder on the same side. The procedure can be done bilaterally or unilaterally, depending on patient’s situation.

Bilateral Politano Leadbetter Ureteric Reimplantations are also necessary for patients with congenital anomalies of the urinary tract. Bilateral Politano Leadbetter Ureteric Reimplantation Surgery was first performed in 1968 at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
