A rare spine deformity cured

A rare deformity known as arthogryposis multiplex congenitia affecting 1 in 3000 children was cured at Maxcure Hospitals in Hyderabad. Nine-yearold Sai Keerthana was brought to Max Cure Hospitals with deformity of the back and also the condition was gradually progressing. On evaluation, the doctors found that she has right thoracic scoiliosis with 75 degree deformity.

 

 

Victims of this disease suffer from stiff and nonfunctional joints. Scoliosis is one of the features of this disease.

 

 

Dr Surya Prakash, Consultant Spine surgeon, MaxCure Hospitals, said, “ This was a very critical and challenging surgery. Based on the deformity, surgical procedure was the only option. Respiratory abnormalities and malignant hyperthermia (increase in body temp.) are common in AMC patients making this surgery more complicated. Also, AMC patients have fragile blood vessels and some defects in blood clotting mechanisms which lead to high bleeding intraoperatively.”

 

 

“It was a 6 hours procedure in which we approached from back and we have put screws and rods and corrected the deformity.We got a very good correction.We used intraoperative nerve monitoring to improve safety. With the help of anesthesia team we successfully completed the surgery,” he added.

 

 

AMC kids also have very low body weight with very little fat and muscle mass compare to normal children of same age. Their bones are deformed and thin to have good screw hold for correction.

 

 

Keerthana spent 5 days in the hospital and was managed with analgesics and other supportive medication.She wasmade to sit on day2 and she could walk on day 3.

 

 

She came back to hospital after one week for the review. The healing was satisfactory and suture removal was done on 15 th day.She is 4 cm taller than before surgery and curve had reduced significantly.
