Smokers Are More Likely to Suffer From Postoperative Complications
According to a recent study, 1 in 10 deaths worldwide is caused due to smoking. And of all these deaths, 50% of them took place in just 4 countries, with India being one of them.
Touted as the 2nd largest risk factor in the world for early death and disability, smoking is undoubtedly a deadly habit. In recent times, the doctors at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in Vasant Kunj, have provided yet another strong reason for people to quit smoking.
The doctors say that smokers are more prone to postoperative complications, especially when it comes to orthopaedic surgeries like knee replacements and hip replacements.
Dr Vivek Mahajan, a Consultant Joint Replacement Surgeon at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, said, “Most smokers take a longer time to recover from orthopaedic surgeries. People who are able to quit smoking before an ortho surgery can potentially benefit from better outcomes, including quicker mobility restoration and lesser pain.”
