ORGAN TRANSPLANT COORDINATOR PROGRAMME SUPPORT BY MAXCURE HOPSITALS

Hyderabad, 30th August  2018: Jeevandan – Cadaver transplantation programme by Government of Telangana in association with MaxCure Hospitals has conducted an Organ Transplant Coordinator training programme at Best Western Ashoka hotel today. This program was aimed at training the transplant coordinators from identifying potential organ donors and managing the whole donation process from brain death to transplantation. The process of Organ donation and procurement include determination of brain death; the obtaining of consent from relatives of patient for organ donation; donor management: organ retrieval, preparation, preservation, packaging and final transport to the transplant hospital by coordinating with the organ harvesting team and Organ transplantation team.

Every year there more than 2lakh patients dying in India due to end stage organ failure. There is a need to create awareness about Organ Donation.

Organ transplant coordinators act as the bridge between organ donation motivation and allotment of organ to organ recipients. Jeevandan was started in 2011 and the transplant coordinator training programme was started in 2015.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Swarnalatha, Jeevandan in charge, said, “We are glad to hold this programme in association with MaxCure Hospitals. The main aim of this program is to enlighten the coordinators about their role. Transplant coordinators position themselves between patient and relatives on one hand and treating doctor's team and cadaver transplantation team on the other hand.”

Dr. Manisha Sahai, Transplant Coordinator programme convener said, “Today, 85 members attended this programme conducted in association with MaxCure hospitals. In 2015-16, the first transplant coordinator programme trained 34 members and the following year, 45 members were trained. The 2017-18 batch with 100 members attended this program. This training is specially aimed keeping in mind the latest amendments of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994.”

“Till date, MaxCure Hospital has performed 20 liver, 5 kidney transplantations, out of which 9 - cadaver liver 2  and cadaver kidneys have been utilized. Transplant coordinators should be appointed by all the transplantation centers the role motivate and promote organ donation and smoothens the process,” says
