Menopause Management - Still A New Field

Menopause Management - Still A New Field

A multi-pronged approach is necessary to deal with the numerous problems that arise during the onset of menopause.

A large number of urban women approach gynecologists only after menopause. Many of them suffer from problems of bone density loss, vision problems, dental issues, hormonal problems and even skin issues.

Specialized Clinics - The Need Of the Hour

President of the Indian Menopause Society, Dr H P Pattanaik explained, “It’s important to treat the condition of menopause under one umbrella with a team of specialists to aid patients. Both preventive and curative options must be made available so that they can lead a fit and free life.”

Diminished eyesight and dry eyes syndrome are some of the most common problems arising due to hormonal changes in the body. The most severe impact of menopause is due to the diminishing bone density in the body that makes patients susceptible to falls and fractures.

A Lack Of Awareness

Dr G Bhavani explained, “Many patients in urban areas approach doctors only after a drastic event like a fall or a problem in the uterus. It’s often the children who bring their parents along. Most of them come at a stage where only curative care can be offered.”

“It’s only in recent times that doctors have started advocating preventive care for women attaining menopause.”

Don’t Ignore These Signs

The average mean age of menopause in the general population is around 45 to 50 years. But after attaining menopause, if there’s sudden bleeding for a few days, women must not take it as a cyclical condition.

Dr Geeta Naidu, Gynecologist, explained, “Sudden bleeding is a warning sign that there’s something wrong in the body. It could be either endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer or any other uterine problem.”

Menopause management is still at a nascent stage in the country. Awareness in elderly women needs to be raised quickly.
