International Conference on Spine and Orthopedics Biomechanics by ISIC

International conference organized at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi, covers premiere aspects of application of clinical biomechanics in treating and preventing spinal and orthopedic problems. This is part of the endeavour to set up the first of its kind Biomechanics laboratory in India.

The world’s leading surgeons on spine and orthopaedics biomechanics gathered together at the 2nd edition of the International Workshop on Clinical Spine and Orthopedics Biomechanics organized by Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC), New Delhi, from April 13th to April 15th 2018. 

Collaborating with ISIC are world renowned institutions such as IIT Delhi, University of Toledo, USA, Hamburg University of Technology, Germany, Spinal Cord Society, India, amongst others. The event was organized in ISIC campus, where experts had strong discussions on latest innovations and technology that has high public impact.

To grace the event Major HPS Ahluwalia, Chairman, ISIC, Dr.A.K.Mukherjee, Director General, ISIC, Dr. HS Chhabra, Medical Director and Chief of Spine Services, ISIC, were present along with Prof Vijay Goel, Distinguished University Professor, University of Toledo, Dr. Patrick Kluger, Spine Surgeon, Germany, Dr.Gerd Huber, Vice Director of the Institute of Biomechanics at TUHH Hamburg University of Technology & Dr. Dinesh Kalyansundaram, IIT Delhi.

“Biomechanics today is one of those fields which have the best potential for innovation in healthcare proving to be a powerful and indispensable ally of the Spine and orthopaedic clinician. Understanding how mechanics in the human body works is a leap towards finding a solution of orthopaedic and spinal ailments that limit human functioning.  We are attempting to understand in-depth review of the current knowledge of biomechanics across all tissues in the musculoskeletal system, at all size scales, and with direct relevance to engineering and clinical applications. Better understanding would help to develop novel medical devices (e.g., orthopaedic implants), technology and systems capable of delivering substantial healthcare benefit, and to translate new engineering technologies into clinical practice. Updated rehabilitation protocols for treatment of various ailments can provide overwhelming results. This can be implicated in areas like orthopedic trauma, spinal trauma, sports medicine and joint replacement and other orthopedic problems”, said Major HPS Ahluwalia, Chairman, ISIC.

Spine and Orthopedics biomechanics is the study of mechanical systems in the human body focusing on prevention and treatment of spinal and musculoskeletal disorders. With the increasing incidence of spinal and orthopedic ailments due to sedentary lifestyles, desk jobs, accidents, and workout, sports and related injuries, there is a greater need to integrate knowledge of orthopedic biomechanics into prevention and treatment mechanisms.

The lab will provide testing facility for implant industry to test & validate their products. This will help the industries to develop novel implants as a part of Make in India scheme and help them to be competitive in the world market.

The conference held seminars, workshops and discussions on topics of total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, biomechanical designing, clinical spine biomechanics, trauma, knee, hip and spinal implants, among others. It also had meet-the-expert sessions where the audience was able to interact more closely with those who have created a special place in the field.   

Across the international healthcare industry, more than 67 specialists from the fields of biomechanical engineering; research scholars, physical medicine & rehabilitation professionals; spinal, neuro, and orthopedic surgery and industry attended the event as faculty, guiding many others in respective fields.

The conference aimed to deliver a 360-degree perspective on the causes, occurrence, and updated treatment mechanisms of various orthopedics related diseases. As a part of the scientific agenda, a series of evidence-based case study presentations, lectures, training modules, and panel discussions took place involving over 225 members of the medical fraternity from reputed Indian and International healthcare organizations.
