IIT Madras collaborates with Health Technology firms in ‘Digital Well-being Alliance’
Chennai, 4th July 2018: Indian Institute of Technology Madras is initiating an alliance called 'Digital Wellbeing Alliance' to deploy digital technologies with the objective of making Chennai the 'Digital Wellbeing Capital' of the World. It is intended to improve quality of life for healthcare providers and seekers; and to leverage India’s strength to enhance global health and wellness care.
The inauguration took place on 4th July 2018, at IITM by Dr. Ram D. Sriram, a renowned AI and healthcare expert. A workshop that followed the inaugural function included eminent speakers such as Prof. Amar Gupta from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Dr. Julian Goldman from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Dr. Amit Sheth from Wright State University, Dr. Soundar Kumara from Penn State University, and Prof. D. Janakiram, IITM. A panel discussion in the workshop will be moderated by Dr. Vinod Abraham, professor and head of Community Health, CMC Vellore.
Prof M. Manivannan, Biomedical Engineering Group, Department of Applied Mechanics, IITM, one of those spearheading the initiative, spoke about the brainstorming session, emphasising its importance. The utilisation of technologies in the medical sector was discussed. This included a discussion on recording, storing, and analysis of medical records.
A dialogue took place on the interoperability of devices such as BP readers, glucometers, weighing machines, ECG machines, to build a single repository of information. The information could securely be stored in a blockchain, with patients, doctors or hospitals, and medical insurance agents being able to access data only relevant to them. Collected data can be analysed and interpreted by AI, and machine-learning algorithms could be used to predict the onset of certain diseases. Future workshops will discuss the logistics of the implementation of what was discussed, including the involvement of academic institutions, government bodies, hospitals, and medical device manufacturers.
