65 year old kidney recipient gets second life at Global Hospital after defeating COVID 19
Mumbai: A team headed by Dr Prashant Borade, Head- Critical Care Unit, Global Hospital, Mumbai successfully treated a family of four spanning three generations including 6-year-old and 65-year-old grandson and grandfather respectively for COVID-19. The grandfather Mr. Chandrakant Jadhav who had undergone a renal transplant in the month of December, 2019 has responded well to the treatment.
India is under the grip of coronavirus, and the number of corona positive cases is rising at an alarming rate. Similarly, Mr. Sunil Jadhav, a 36-year-old resident of Dadar was diagnosed with coronavirus, after he got himself tested for fever and was admitted to Global Hospital on 17th April. His father too got admitted with symptoms of COVID-19 on 19th April. Things worsened when within the next 4 days, his wife Mrs. Rekha and his 6-year-old son Neel also were diagnosed with COVID-19. Global Hospital, Mumbai, gave a fresh lease of life to this family by offering timely treatment.
Dr Prashant Borade, Head- Critical Care Unit, Global Hospital said, “All the four offered challenges to us as a clinical team because of the wide variation in symptoms and signs. While Mr. Chandrakant had a very stormy course; his grandson recovered easily from the infection. Mr. Sunil and Mrs. Rekha remained symptomatic for a couple of days; Neel was the youngest warrior recovering in 3 days from all symptoms. He then motivated the entire family to fight the infection which gave a boost to our clinical efforts. Mr. Chandrakant already was immunosuppressed after his kidney transplant, which pre-disposes him to any infection. Hence, we had to be extra vigilant while treating him. He was intubated and ventilated due to ARDS, but he was a true warrior and his spirit helped our efforts in getting him extubated and then well on to the road of recovery. Mr Chandrakant Jadhav was discharged from hospital on 26th May after 37 days of hospitalisation. His daughter-in-law Mrs. Rekha Jadhav and Grandson Master Neel were discharged from hospital on 1st May after 9 days of treatment in the hospital and his son Mr. Sunil Jadhav was discharged from hospital on 28 April after 11 days of treatment.
Mr. Chandrakant Jadhav said, “After getting diagnosed with coronavirus, our family was devastated, but we didn’t lose hope. I want to thank the doctors, nurses, and the other staff who took great care of our family. This is the second time I have been treated at Global Hospital. Not just the clinical expertise but I am touched by the emotional support as well that was given to us. It played a very important role in our recovery as COVID-19 takes a toll on our emotional health. We also got surprised when Mr. Boman Irani shared a video message for my grandson. Neel was really very excited after getting the message from him. Mr. Irani even spoke to me on the day I was going back home after a long fight with COVID-19.
Dr Vivek Talaulikar, Chief Executive Officer, Global Hospital, Mumbai, said, “ Although the number of cases are on rise, there have been a lot of cases like this family which are exemplary. We are continuously working with the authorities to provide the best healthcare facility to fight this pandemic. Unlike earlier days, to avoid cross contamination patients are not allowed to meet their family members while they are admitted in the hospital, which takes a toll on their mental health. As our social responsibility we make sure that we not only treat the patients clinically but also provide them the much needed emotional support. We are utilising digital means to connect the patient with the family so that the latter is aware about the health updates of their loved ones. We understand the anxiety a family goes through during the phase. People should not be frightened and consider COVID-19 pandemic as the end of the world. At this time of uncertainty, when people across are taking rapid and radical measures, we should not let any stigma get attached to it as a threat. I would request everyone to act responsibly and stay cautiously optimistic. We should stay connected digitally as much as possible, be empathetic with other and treat people with compassion and humanity.”
