Conjoined kidneys treated with laparoscopy at KIMS Kurnool

Kurnool, June 23, 2022: Kidneys are very important for blood purification. But, in the case of a 57-year-old woman, they were not in a state where they should be normal, but they are almost attached (the horseshoe kidney) and are located elsewhere, and one of them is inflamed. Doctors of Kurnool KIMS hospital treated her with surgery without making any cuts. Dr Manoj Kumar, consultant urologist, andrologist and transplant surgeon, disclosed the details. "A 57-year-old woman from Kurnool has had her kidneys conjoined in the lower part for a very long time. This condition is called the horseshoe kidney. In addition to that, they were located near the urinary bladder, almost near the uterus while they should be usually located at the bottom of the rib cage. This is called an ectopic kidney. In addition to these problems, there was some swelling in the left kidney. We also observed a pelvic ureteric junction obstruction, which means blockage of the urinary tract. She was already given a hysterectomy. So there were problems like intestinal adhesion. Normally, there is no problem with this. But the kidneys here are almost near the uterus. So, during the surgery, all these intestines were to be moved. We have treated this woman with all kinds of complications with a 1 cm cut, and 2 half cm cuts. She did not have any post-surgical complications and was discharged on the third day of the surgery." Consultant Urologist, Andrologist, Laparoscopic and Transplant Surgeon Dr Manoj Kumar and Anaesthetist Dr Vijaya Sai from KIMS Hospital, Kurnool participated in the treatment.
