Cancers among youngsters on the rise

Cancers among youngsters on the rise

* Breast Cancer incidences among 20–40-year-olds have doubled, say doctors
* Diagnoses of breast cancer have increased steadily in women under age 50 over the past two decades

Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer detected in women, and its prevalence has recently increased. In this regard, doctors at Amrita Hospitals reported that the frequency of breast cancer patients aged 20 to 40 has grown.

Usually, 60% of cases are diagnosed in advanced stages, resulting in a poorer cure rate. Nonetheless, regular checkups can boost the cure rate to 80-90%.

Breast cancer screenings should begin at age 20 with a breast self-examination, and if any abnormalities are discovered, a clinical breast evaluation should be performed, followed by a three-year repeat. Annual mammograms and regular self-examinations are recommended for women over the age of 50.

Dr. Shiveta Razdan, Consultant, Breast Oncology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, stated, “A breast cancer diagnosis causes emotional distress and anxieties about the future, but correct treatment can restore normalcy. Informed decision-making is critical for surgical operations, which need extensive discussions of options, potential risks, and recovery timeframes. The type of surgery is determined by the size of the tumour, the number of tumours in the breast, the stage of cancer, genetic factors, breast volume, overall health, and patient preferences.

Systemic chemotherapy may be used before breast-conserving surgery if the cancer is greater than the breast size. Oncoplastic breast surgery, which uses plastic surgery techniques to preserve cosmesis, can be performed for tiny tumours with acceptable breast volume. Individualised treatments guarantee the greatest road to recovery and a quality life.”Experts have also stated that early detection is critical for breast cancer survival. Age-appropriate tests are critical for preserving breast health.

Several techniques for breast cancer screening are emerging. Early detection is critical for achieving higher cure and survival rates. When women report concerns about their breasts, a timely evaluation is required. For early adolescents and those in their 20s and 30s, ultrasonography is the first imaging option, followed by mammography if necessary. Women aged 30 to 40 can have an ultrasonography along with a mammogram. Contrast-enhanced Mammography (CEM) is an advanced method for early diagnosis, particularly in high-risk groups, capable of identifying malignancies as small as a centimetre. This technology is a problem solver, and it can also help with staging and post-chemotherapy response assessment," added, Dr. Lekshmy R, Associate Professor, Radiology, Amrita Hospital, Kochi.

Dr. Vijaykumar DK, Head of Breast and Gyno Oncology at Amrita Hospital in Kochi, discussed the global issues that medical specialists confront when creating vaccines. He explained. “Vaccines have proven to be beneficial in fighting diseases with a single, identified cause in cancer prevention. However, breast cancer presents a complex issue due to its multifaceted nature. Our primary goal in this study is to strengthen the body's immune system, as a strong immune system can help lower the chance of cancer formation. While developing a direct vaccination for breast cancer is currently impractical, ongoing research aim to boost immunity and lower the risk of cancer.”

Health professionals recommend adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle that emphasises nourishing diets and daily physical activity over sedentary behaviour. They emphasise the importance of regular breast cancer screenings and self-examinations for early identification and effective therapy, and suggest proactive screening for people of all ages to protect their health.
