WINTER BODY PAINS
With the onset of Winter, there is an accompanying onset of body pains. It’s often inexplicable, how you wake up with aches and pains, especially since they are unrelated to any physical strain or injury. The main reason behind these pains is the winter temperatures. For instance, people with joint pain, especially Arthritis, may be sensitive to changes in barometric pressure. It could be that when the cartilage that cushions the bones inside a joint is worn away, nerves in the exposed bones might pick up on changes in pressure. Changes in barometric pressure may make your tendons, muscles, and any scar tissue expands and contract, and that can create pain in the joints affected by arthritis. Low temperatures can also make the fluid inside the joints thicker, thus making them feel stiffer. You may also feel more pain when the weather prevents you from moving around as much as you normally would. Do remember that inactive joints can get stiff and painful.
Says Dr. Sudheer Daara of Epione Pain Management, “The prevalence of chronic pain in the society is 26 %. These pains tend to get exaggerated during the winter season, due to low temperatures."
Pain is a protective mechanism to stop you from causing further damage to affected parts, but the pain doesn’t always mean you should choose to stay in bed and not exercise at all. Staying active is essential to your health in the winter. The movement also helps your joints to stay mobile and keeps your muscles strong. This helps to reduce your pain. However, if you are new to exercise, don’t overdo it. Slowly build up the intensity of your workout.
“The reason for the increase in suffering during the winter season is the cold atmosphere, which is responsible for muscle spasms in the body,” says Dr. Sudheer Daara. “When the muscles are stiff, they can cause more pain, and one can become more sensitive to the pain. Conditions like sciatica, low back pain, joint pains, cervical spondylitis and, migraine can get worse during the cold atmosphere, requiring more medication.”
Dr. Sudheer Dara advises, “The precautions to take keep your body warm with blankets, and maintain a good sleeping posture.
After getting up in the morning, loosen your muscles by doing a few exercises like stretching and jogging.”
Dr. Dara goes on to say, “Don’t stretch your muscles asymmetrically, but follow your Doctor’s advice when you do exercises.
If any particular region is aching, it can be controlled by hot fomentation and massaging.
Use proper medication prescribed by your Doctor in case the pain becomes worse. Reach out to a specialist when the pain is not controlled by medication.”
