Total knee replacement done on a lady with a complex knee deformity Kims Savera doctors perform rare surgery to give relief to her

Anantapur, 19th June 2021: Arthritis causes swelling and tenderneness of joints. Arthritis, which is caused by the wearing down of bones is called osteoarthritis. Indians in their old age usually get this problem. Most of the women after menopause also prone to this. Kims Savera doctors treated such woman, who was suffering from osteoarthritis and unable to walk without support was treated with total knee replacement and got relief.

Consultant Orthopaedist and famous joint replacement surgeon Dr. Rajeshkumar Reddy, who has successfully done the knee replacement surgery explains the condition of the patient and treatment procedure.

"Arunakumari (65) of Anantapur was unable to walk for 7 years without support. She consulted several doctors at different hospitals but got no relief. Then she came to Kims Savera hospital. After several tests, we found that osteoarthritis was in the 4th stage with complex bone issues. In this stage, the Cartilage, which protects the knee completely wears down and the underlying soft bone exposes and the joint bows. Her left knee had a bow of more than 40degrees. The right knee has a bit less problem. So, we have decided to operate the left knee first and then the right knee for joint replacement. Surgery was done with complete co-operation from consultant anesthesiologist of Kims Savera hospital Dr. Ravishankar. The deformity was corrected, the knee joint was restored to normal.  She was made to walk with the support of staff after 5 hours of surgery. As the patient recovered fast and was walking without any problem, she was discharged and sent to the home."

Stem extenders are used in such severe osteoarthritis cases with bowing to support the knee. Such rare surgery was successfully done amid the pandemic situation and lockdown and deformity was corrected. The stem extenders which were used were brought from Hyderabad, explains Dr. Rajeshkumar reddy. Usually, such complex surgeries are performed only in the hospitals of Metro cities. But now, they are done even in Anantapur at Kims Savera hospital as it has state of art technology, expert doctors, and all facilities. 

Osteoarthritis patients have to take precautions right from the primary stage. One will face many problems if one neglects knee pains in the starting stage, says Dr. Rajesh Kumar Reddy. If this knee pain not treated in early stages will extend to other knee and hip and the back pain also starts. As the patients cannot walk due to these pains, they will put up weight. As diabetes and hypertension are not in control, slowly they are also prone to heart issues.
