Advantages of Endoscopic Spine Surgery at Star Hospitals
Smaller incisions, less bleeding, and shorter stay in the hospital. Patients generally go home in 1 or 2 days and are performed as day care procedures.
Endoscopic Spine Surgery involves the use of specialized instruments, to access the spine through small incisions hence less normal tissue damage and is effective in most cases.
Post-operative pain is less than pain after traditional open procedures hence can resume work at the earliest.
Endoscopic procedure such as discectomy, laminectomy and fusion are performed with special tools. During the procedure a small incision is made, and instruments are inserted through the skin and soft tissues, down to the spinal column. This creates a tunnel to the small area where the problem exists in the spine.
The surgeon will access the spine using small instruments that fit through the center of the working channel. Any bone or disc material is removed and any devices necessary for fusion such as screws or rods are inserted through a retractor.
In order to see where to place the incision and insert the instrument, the surgeon is guided by fluoroscopy. This method displays real-time x-ray images of the patient's spine on a screen throughout the surgery.
An endoscope provides excellent illumination and magnification during minimally invasive spine procedures. At the end of the procedure, the sheath is removed, and the muscles return to their original position. This limits the muscle damage that is more commonly seen in open surgeries.

In majority, these surgeries can be finished without any sutures, hence also called stitchless spine surgery.

Common Endoscopic Spine Surgeries offered at Star Hospitals

Endoscopic Discectomy – Herniated disk
Endoscopic Over-The-Top Decompression
Endoscopic Spine Fixation

Endoscopic spine surgery can be performed anywhere in the spine whether it is cervical, dorsal or lumbar.
These procedures can be performed under local or regional anesthesia and hence beneficial for elderly patients who are traditionally considered  unfit for surgery owing to anesthesia related risks.
To help you regain strength and speed up your recovery, you may need physiotherapy. Specific exercises will help you become strong enough to return to work and daily activities.
If you have had a fusion procedure, it may be several months before the bone is solid, although your comfort level will often improve much faster.
