Winter Ailments - Prevention and Protection

Viral infections like flu and sometimes Bacterial infections occur commonly during the winter season. Avoid ice cool liquids and food, avoid walking in the early morning hours and late nights, and wear appropriate clothing to protect yourself from the cold weather. Also, avoid crowded places – gatherings and functions – where one can easily catch an infection merely by shaking hands with people. Dust and pollution along with cool weather aggravate allergic rhinitis and allergic bronchitis in children and adults. In fact, for those suffering from bronchial asthma and chronic lung problems (COPD), there is a high risk of infections and allergies during the winter season.

It is advisable to take a Flu and Pneumococcal vaccination to avoid fever and even pneumonia which can be life-threatening. Wash your hands frequently to keep germs away.

The Flu vaccine is helpful in preventing flu infections by 60 to 70 percent and improves immunity against the flu. It has to be taken every year. Add more fruit and good protein to your diet to boost immunity.

Heart Attacks are more common during the winter season and can be prevented by not smoking and also by maintaining a strict regimen of recommended physical activity like walking.
