RELEASING STRESS THROUGH SOUND THERAPY

RELEASING STRESS THROUGH SOUND THERAPY

Vibrations of sound and music have been related with stress management since centuries. There are numerous studies and research papers which elucidate this phenomenon. Listening to pleasing and soothing tones is associated with lowering anxiety, reducing stress and helps us to enter into a state of relaxation.

Giving his note, Dr. TNJ Rajesh, Consultant - Internal Medicine, STAR Hospitals, Hyderabad, said, “In principle, there are three types of most prevalent techniques. For these procedures to work, an individual first needs to understand the essence and completely adapt.

It can be achieved only when practiced on daily basis. It is to be noted that, without prior experience / practice, these techniques should not be applied because during the time of anxiety, our body will not support something which it is not habituated with.”

TECHNIQUE 1: LISTEN TO YOUR BREATH

Step 1: Keep yourself in a comfortable position (either sitting, standing or lying down)

Step 2: Take a deep breathe in

Step 3: Focus and listen to the sound of breath

Step 4: Hold for few seconds

Step 5: Breathe out slowly

Step 6: Hold for few seconds

Step 7: Repeat this process from Step 2

In the initial phase, you can practice this technique daily for few minutes and as your body gets habituated to it, you can slowly increase the duration as long as you are comfortable. Though it sounds little trivial but breathing well is an art which is mastered by very few. So keep on practicing whenever possible.

During anxiety because of rapid and shallow breathing, we generally tend to inhale Carbon dioxide exhaled by our own body. Further deteriorating the condition, it will amplify the stress levels. This technique will help us to get relief from such situations. By listening to the sound of breath we can divert our brain from stress. And also by taking deep breath, we can certainly increase the amount of oxygen inhalation.

TECHNIQUE 2: LISTEN TO SOFT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Listening to soft instrumental music without any sort of lyrics has proven to be incredibly beneficial to get relief from stress. It has indeed, remarkable effect in lowering anxiety levels. You can listen to any instrument as per your taste and desire, having said that preferably you should avoid horror, rock, heavy metal music.

TECHNIQUE 3: LISTEN TO THE SOUND OF WAVES

Repetitive, soft whooshing sounds of gentle waves of the river or ocean can help us attain meditative state in our brain.  These natural sounds produce serene vibes and encompass tranquillity. It alters our hyper frequency and provide relief from anxiety, panic and stress levels. It creates a sense of calmness in our inner self. By listening to these sounds on a continuous basis, one can improve their mental health.

Doctors, scientists and research scholars have been studying this phenomenon since decades. Its significance is increasing exponentially in the domain of human health and holistic wellbeing. These techniques, as mentioned above, will provide permanent relief from chronic stress if practiced on daily basis.
