Pre-Delivery Assessment Crucial In High-Risk Pregnancies
A whopping 26 percent of all pregnancies in India are high-risk cases due to late motherhood.
Experts have found that early intervention of the anesthesia team helps in preventing complications that may occur later on. Having a proper backup plan in place is very essential.
Three Major Complications
The major causes of maternal death are three leading complications including bleeding during delivery, high blood pressure and infections. All of these complications can be controlled and managed if the anesthesia and critical care teams are properly trained.
Dr Sunil T Pandya, an Anesthetist, explained, “We’re looking forward to patient-doctor coordination at a higher level so that the mother is well prepared before delivery. It is very important to have a pre-delivery assessment by an anesthesiologist after 30 to 33 weeks into one’s pregnancy. Underlying medical problems can be identified at this point. If there is a risk of preterm delivery, steroids can be administered to enhance fetal lung maturity.”
Many women suffer from long-term backaches, chronic pain syndromes and even fear psychosis simply because the treatment and critical care during the time of delivery weren't properly carried out.
Well-Trained Anesthetists A Must
Dr A Rampapa, Senior Anesthesiologist, had this to say, “In many, the patient’s pain was not treated properly during and after delivery. Due to this reason, there have been issues that are lifelong in the case of numerous women. Adequate care is now being taken with the help of technology so that such mistakes are not repeated. And for this, the anesthetist has to be well-trained.”
A strong need is felt for good antenatal and postnatal exercises as it helps to deal and manage a lot of issues. Maternity Hospitals in the city are seeing a 50 percent increase in high-risk cases since the last decade.
A pre-delivery assessment must be done by an anesthesiologist at the 33-week mark in high-risk cases as it helps the doctor to understand the stress on the patient’s heart.
