KNOW YOUR HEADACHE

KNOW YOUR HEADACHE

It is interesting to know that there are more varieties of headaches than you are aware of, andit is vitally important to be clued in about the kind of headache you are experiencing, especially before you pop an over the counter pill. In fact, you must be aware that if you are experiencing frequent headaches, you need to see a Doctor without delay.

Here we look at a few commonly occurring headaches that can be classified under two distinct categories – Primary and Secondary.

A Primary Headache is basically one that is not caused by another condition, but is a condition in itself. Some Primary Headaches are:

Migraines

You have a migraine headache if you are experiencing visual disturbances and a throbbing pain on just one side of the head. People suffering with a Migraine will most likely experience an enhanced sensitivity to light, sound and smell, and possibly even nausea and vomiting. Migraines often last a few days, and can be a lifelong condition. If you are suffering with chronic migraine, you should consult your Doctor about preventive treatment.

Tension Headaches

These are characterised by a dull, constant pain on both sides of the head. If you are suffering with a Tension Headache, you may also experience tenderness of the face, head, neck and shoulders and a feeling of pressure behind your eyes. A headache of this nature can last several hours. The cause could be dehydration, exposure to loud noise, stress, anxiety and depression. Drink plenty of water, relax, exercise and meditate. Do not reach for self prescribedmedication, but see your Doctor if your headache persists.

Cluster Headaches

These are headaches accompanied by a painful burning sensation behind the eyes. You may also experience other symptoms like watering eyes, swollen eyelid/s, a blocked or runny nose and sensitivity to light and sound.  Cluster Headaches can persist for weeks or months, and take place at the same time of day, usually a few hours after falling asleep at night. These headaches are more likely to occur in smokers.

Exertional Headaches

These headachesare triggered by strenuous exercise, including running, jumping, weight lifting, etc. They may last for a short while or up to two days. You will recognise an Exertional Headache by a throbbing pain in the entire region of your head. Don’t ignore the symptoms or attempt to treat them by yourself, but consult a Doctor.

Hypnic Headaches

This form of headache usually begins in your 50s, but the onset can be earlier. Hypnic Headaches are also called Alarm Clock Headaches. They are a relatively rare form of headache and wake people up during the night. If you are experiencing a Hypnic Headache, you will generally feel a mild to moderate throbbing pain on both sides of your head. This may last up to three hours, and may be accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. The cause for these headaches is unknown, and it is best to consult your Doctor for advice on treatment.

Secondary Headaches

Secondary Headaches are those resulting from other problems. These problems could be a head injury, sudden withdrawal from caffeine, overuse of medication, etc.

A common Secondary Headache is a Sinus Headache, caused by swelling of the sinuses. There are also caffeine related headaches from too much caffeine consumption, menstrual headaches related to hormonal changes and hangover headaches.

Whatever your headache, it is important to recognise it as a medical condition that needs the right treatment. Never ignore a headache as it could be indicative of a more serious problem. Always consult your Doctor.
