KIMS doctors save life of the farmer in a 16-hour Hybrid Marathon Surgery

Hyderabad, 15th July 2018: Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hyderabad, announced the success of a rare hybrid aortic aneurysm surgery on a farmer. The 50-year-old farmer’s life-threatening condition was diagnosed when he came to KIMS from a village near Guntur with pain in the abdomen. A challenging 16-hour hybrid surgery was successfully performed by team of vascular surgeons led by Dr. Narendranadh Meda and Dr. Chandrasekhar in co-ordination with anaesthesia team.
Dr Meda, Vascular and Endovascular surgeon, an expert in aortic-related diseases, said, “Patient was a known hypertensive. On investigation with CT, we found that he had a very large thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm measuring 9cm in diameter was seen with impending rupture, involving the arteries supplying the bowel and kidneys. Generally, Aneurysms greater than 5cm are considered dangerous and need treatment.”
Open de-branching bypass surgery was conducted to replace portions of visceral and renal vessels with a Dacron woven graft with reversing supply from the normal infrarenal aorta. With the blood supply secured, a stent was placed to direct blood flow away from the aneurysmal segment. The process took 16 hours.
Abdominal aortic aneurysms generally cause no symptoms and are found when a patient is evaluated for other medical conditions. Aneurysms may occur due to hypertension, smoking, infection, trauma or age. If a person has a family history of aneurysms, and feels sudden severe pain in the abdomen and back, they should seek immediate medical attention. Routine ultrasound of the abdomen can pick up the condition in an asymptomatic patient.
