Doctors at Century Hospitals rescue 14-months baby in Emergency
Hyderabad, 19th June 2018:
A team of doctors at Century Hospitals has successfully saved the life of a 14-months baby girl, who was admitted to the hospital with breathing difficulty due to a custard apple seed that got stuck in her lungs. Had the seed not been removed in time, the situation could have resulted in the death of the child.
Baby Akira accidentally gulped a custard apple seed and started facing breathing difficulties. When rushed to Century Hospitals, and on taking an X-Ray and CT scan, it was noted that the seed got stuck in the lung (Left main bronchus). A foreign body, like this, could cause great damage to the vital organs; and sometimes would require a surgical procedure to remove the obstructing particle.
The Team of experts from Century Hospital conducted necessary tests and identified that the seed was struck in the bronchus zone, the main airway of the lungs. Removing the particle from the trachea had been a difficult task for the team by considering the fact that the airways are tiny in a 14-months-old baby.
Commenting on the procedure, Dr. Hemanth Kaukuntla, Chief CT surgeon, Century Hospital said, “Endoscopy techniques with specialized equipment should be used to ensure that the situation does not further deteriorate, and the foreign body is removed. After a two-hour long procedure and with the aid of a lot of specialized equipment, the team of experts at the Century Hospitals evacuated the seed to save the girl child. The seed was 1.5 cms long and 1 cms wide, big enough to completely obstruct the bronchus.”
Expressing his gratitude to the medical team at Century Hospitals, father of the child, Mr. Rammohan said, “We will be ever grateful to the experts at Century Hospital who have not just done their best on medical parameters but have also helped me and my wife feel better in such a traumatic situation. And now we are delighted to see our little angel is safe and healthy.”
The procedure was performed by a large team of experts specializing in various fields – from Pulmonology to cardiothoracic surgery, Anesthesia, ENT, and pediatrics. The team of experts was helmed by Dr. Hemanth Kaukuntla, Dr. B Hemanth Kumar, Dr. Praveen Nandagiri; Dr. Abhijeet Dashetwar, with the support of Dr. Satyanarayana, Dr. Sushmita, and Dr. Kiran Kumar.
