9 year old boy saved by Continental Hospitals who suffered from severe burns

Hyderabad, May 09, 2021: The common misconception about steam inhalation that it can kill COVID-19 virus which led to a crisis to a 9-year-old boy. At Continental Hospitals, Gachibowli we had quite a few challenging cases where children with COVID positive and other associated illnesses were admitted. One such case was 9-year-old boy who was Covid-19 positive and accidentally spilled hot water while trying to take steam and sustained burn injuries.

The boy was rushed to Continental Hospitals for burns, and on testing he and his mother were found to be Covid-19 positive. On clinically examination by Dr. Anjul Dayal, Sr Pediatrician & Pediatric Intensivist, Continental Hospitals, Gachibowli, it was found around 25% of the body had severe burns in the lower limb region including his genitals.

The boy was immediately admitted in Pediatric Intensive care unit (PICU) where there was a dedicated room created for children diagnosed with COVID-19 requiring intensive care. This PICU is manned by nurses who are always in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) with N 95 mask. The exit and entry into this unit is highly restricted to prevent the infection from spreading.

Commenting on the treatment by Dr. Anjul Dayal, Sr Pediatrician & Pediatric Intensivist, Continental Hospitals, a detailed treatment procedure was mapped out for the boy along with a Multi-Disciplinary team of Specialists i.e. Pediatric Intensive Care team, Paediatric Surgeon and Plastic Surgeon. While collagen dressing was done on an immediate basis, child was treated for COVID through IV medications. Considering young age of the child, vacuum dressing was applied for faster healing for the wounds. With nearly two weeks passing since, the child and his mother are now not displaying any symptoms of coronavirus and are being discharged. The child will require a few more hospital visits for the dressing and will require a skin grafting later, but at present, his life is out of danger.

“Taking steam inhalation is usually a home remedy for common cold and cough and upper respiratory tract infections. There is not very sound scientific evidence to prove that taking steam prevents corona virus infection.

However, if the steam is given to a child, it should be done under the supervision of elders and with all the precautions to prevent spillage of hot water which can cause devastating burns. Parental education is paramount to preventing these injuries. Hence, never leave children who cannot manage on their own in such circumstances,” added Dr. Anjul Dayal.
